Just One More Mile is the personal site of Paul and Tracy Beattie, where you will find details of our adventures, whether on 2 wheels, 2 feet or simply relaxing with a glass of beer and some good company...
After a "trip of a lifetime" what is a man supposed to do? Does he simply relax in his favourite armchair and stare wistfully off into the distance while regaling those around him of tales of his past adventures? Or does he seek out further opportunities to add to the collection for those days to come when he is no longer capable of such things?
It won't come as a surprise to anyone that I prefer the latter choice.
And so, with Tracy's encouragement, I'm once again heading across the Pond to ride my motorcycle on an exciting adventure! This time I'll be riding from East to West as opposed to from North to South, following a route known as the Trans-America Trail, or TAT. The route is the brainchild of an American rider called Sam Correro, who spent years researching a route from Tennessee all the way to the Pacific Ocean in Oregon. The route isn't what you might expect, in that it avoids sealed (tarmac) roads wherever possible, sticking to ancient dirt roads and farm tracks. It's therefore much more of a wilderness ride than sitting on the highway, and therefore much more of a riding challenge. His website www.transamtrail.com provides lots of information on the route.
I have Aaron, my friend from the Trans-Americas trip in 2009, to thank for the opportunity to ride the trail,
as it was all his idea (so I can also blame him should it all go wrong!). He's bought the maps and found a couple of other fools to join
us. As usual I'll be trying to maintain a blog of the trip, which you will be able to read here.
STOP PRESS: The TAT Blog has moved!
My web hosting company has locked down the bandwidth for "blogs" for some reason. So to circumvent that, I've created a new page for the TAT blogs, which you can find here enjoy!
I hope you'll join me for the ride...
Simple: whenever we went out to ride our bikes, that’s the cry that we gave before we finally had to turn round and head for home…
It is perhaps a little less appropriate these days, but it still sums up our love of travel...
